Nithsdale Regatta 11 June
GRC athletes loaded a full trailer at the weekend and headed south to Dumfries for the long awaited return of the Nithsdale Regatta with the new boy Don towing for the first time and joining a small but elite crew of towing drivers.
GRC had boats entered in single, double, quad and eights events and raced in mixed events and the generation double with Mairi and Jack Brown. In mostly dry but unseasonably windy conditions we won medals in the W Nov 8+ with two Castle Semple ladies, W Nov 2x and a GRC/Clyde composite O Nov 4x+ and delivered some good racing across the board – a good warm up for our own regatta on 18th where hopefully the wind will abate and steering will become slightly easier.
Thanks to Don (the new boy) for driving and taking charge down on the riverbank.
SR Spring Regatta – 23rd & 24th April
Glasgow Rowing Club was very well represented at the weekend for Scottish Rowing Spring Regatta at Strathclyde Park. Seniors and Juniors competed over the 2 days in very challenging conditions. It was bright and sunny for most of the weekend with a very strong crosswind which made for very difficult rowing all weekend.
First to row was Sharon in WMas 1x . She made it to the start and back down, racing hard and without incident in winds that were causing boats to capsize. WNov8+ were at the start in plenty of time and then tried to keep safely out of the way until the start. Attaching to the stakeboat was an interesting experience but they started well and maintained pressure on the other crew right until the end winning by around a length.
OMas 2x Bill and Pete had a great race coming 3rd , again in extremely strong wind conditions. WJ18 2x Stefani and Hannah had a strong time trial and then a great race in the final to come 2nd.
Sunday morning started with WJ18 1x Stefani racing to a very strong position in the B final coming 4th overall.
WNov 4x+ had very strong opposition and extremely strong cross winds which made rowing, starting and racing more exciting than expected. They raced well, looked very strong and finished with a great result. A boat to watch in the next few regattas.
WNov 2x on Sunday saw 3 boats from GRC entering and all raced very well in the time trial and then in B,C and D finals. WMas 2x Sharon and Alison rowed well to come 3rd in a very strong field.
John raced in J15 1x and Daniel in J14 1x. Both raced well in the time trial and their finals with John coming 3rd. Caitlin raced in WJ142x as a composite with Strathclyde Park and raced well in both the time trial and final.
This was probably the worst weather seen for a long time at a Strathclyde Park regatta and arguably some of the races should have been cancelled due to the wind conditions. However, GRC raced well in very strong winds, had no capsizes, learnt a lot of valuable lessons for future racing and everyone represented the club with passion. The Clyde will look so good when we get back to safety!
Thank you to everyone who raced, supported, helped with boat loading and unloading, carried boats and oars to the pontoons – you are very much appreciated.
