Training Notes

UT2, UT1 or SS refers to how hard you are working. I have written a full explanation elsewhere and will put it up in the next few days but in the meantime it is possible to either:

  • If you have a heart rate monitor
-You can use formulas to guesstimate your training heart rate based on your age. Unfortunately most of these are pretty inaccurate so I haven't wanted to include them here without full explanation.
  • If you know your (current) 2000m ergo time
     - then there are tables at http://www.concept2.co.uk/training/interactive.php (see 'zone table' on the menu at the left) that are reasonably good at telling you what to pull on the ergo.

If neither of the above, then use the rule of thumb:

  • UT2: should be able to just about hold a conversation with someone beside you-but not really, really easily!
  • UT1: should be able to talk in broken words, but not full sentences. Legs etc. should be tired and working hard, but not really burning a lot. A bit uncomfortable.

Better still though, a step test with a heart rate monitor is the best way (without special equipment) to judge zones. I would advise everyone who wants to train a bit to do one, although be warned it is quite hard. The test that I would use does not involve you going flat out, but pretty close. It takes about 10-15 minutes. See me (Al W) if you want to do one.
