GL demonstrates the new security door23/12/05
Opening up a whole new world. Pictured here; George 'Veet' Lawson demonstrating the new security door that will let us open up the club room french windows again - UNofficial opening tomorrow, Sat 24th December.
GUBC Western Head -

Saturday 21st January.
Letter and details.
21/12/05White  Christmas Our Internet Sleuth (who brought you the delights of Elf Bowling) has returned from many days of keyboard-breaking labour with this message:
" I don't think we're gonna get snow for christmas but this might do!!!".
19/12/05 Boat-House Clean-up session! The time has come! - and it is 9 a.m. on Wednesday 28 December.
All welcome.
Bring bin bags and large vehicles to transport the garbage.
TUB-FEST!!! There'll be more info presently, but for the moment:
Some photos here.
(Un-edited, any better ones welcome.)
Damage reporting Without wanting to bang on too much - can everyone please realize that it is important to report any damage to equipment - either to the Captain or Bob Reid (i/c Boats) so that the necessary repairs will be carried out. We know that boats and other equipment will get damaged, sometimes even when proper care is taken; but there is no excuse for boats being broken and not repaired, viz. the Alden single that was unusable on Saturday.
18/12/05  GB Trials Lindsay was 6th lightweight. Nice to see her name up there with fellow-Scot Katherine Grainger - the only British woman ever to win two Olympic rowing medals - in the SARA report on the trials at Boston yesterday.
16/12/05 More from the slug:
150 Rowers dressed in Santa Claus outfits on the 5th annual Agecroft rowing club, Santa Claus Pub Crawl.
Best of all, the Surfin' Santa game. Better than Elf Bowling?
FISA Safety document
Thanks to Rachel Quarrel for this:
"FISA have also now published their Minimum Guidelines for Safe Rowing. The only copy I can currently find on the website is the draft, whereas the finalised version has now gone round to national federations, so here it is in PDF format."
14/12/05TubFest! This Saturday.
Names in the hat at 12 noon. This year there will be 2 events :
  • Tub doubles; any GRC member to row, recognised coxes (also to be drawn) steering.
  • Alden singles; for competitors eliminated from round 1 of the tub event.
Unique trophies for the winners have been commissioned, sponsored by BReid Enterprizes.
There is talk of spot-prizes for best outfit, but I take no responsibility for that!
Here's last year's report, to whet your appetite.
From the SARA website:
"Scottish Indoor Rowing: Entry forms for the Scottish Indoor Rowing Champs on Sunday 5th February are now online on the Concept2 website. Closing date for entries is Friday 27th January."
13/12/05It's art!Anyone who's watched the GRC girls row will have thought; "Poetry in motion!". Well, now they've started writing verse too!
7/12/05More Google!Google Earth this time: the views of Glasgow have been recently upgraded, and we now have a crystal clear aerial photo of a busy regatta day sometime in the recent past.
Any suggestions when?
4/12/05 Guess who..came up with this festive idea?
"found this...a little light festive relief that deserves to be shared...we
could have a competition!!!!"
Finally....
I've scanned in Joe's pictures from the Masters.
No editing. Took ages.Joe's BRILLIANT picture from the FISA Masters regatta.

PT 22nd 17:51 Vet E pennant
(well done PT! [Ed.])
Sam 43rd 19:47
Ben 52nd 22:48

Daniel would have won J18 pennant if he'd entered it. It was won by Fraser Quinn SPRC

Here's a wee tale you might like.
My spy at Clyde was spectating along with several others on the suspension bridge at Fred's. Someone had printed copies of Sandy's "acceptable" shouts of encouragement which were on the SARA website earlier in the week, and the spectators were shouting these in chorus, reading from the script."
2/12/05 TubFestCan't wait 2 weeks? Me neither. Here's last year's prcis, to whet your appetite.

29/11/05GRC Members Mailing List
Oh dear.
Some of you have taken to this new system like ducks to the water.
The rest of you are over 40.
Read this, it may help!
More snaps from the HeadCourtesy of FC   - any more? I did hear of a dodgy video.... any stills available from that?
28/11/05Hold the Front Page!!!!
It's been a long time, but our Fours Head has elicited this article from The Herald's

Also - Niall Darroch, of the Clyde Amateurs, has taken some excellent pictures:

Well done,
GRC Members !

"Everyone who helped out yesterday deserves a pat on the back. Yesterday we held the two biggest races in Scotland this year - with 300 competitors on the water at the same time, twice - and did a good job of it."

20/11/05Another British Gold Medal!
I see from Rachel Quarrel's report from the British indoor rowing champs that Lindsay has won the gold medal in her class.
Festive tub
WARNING!
Can I suggest to some of our newer members that a bit of sculling practice might be a good idea if you want to have any chance of survival in the Festive Tub Regatta, where 2 oars good, one oar nae use.
19/11/05Inverness!
A fine day out was had. The Novice Women turned out a creditable 9/21 in their first event, then had the deep joy of a second race over the 4500m course.
The Vet four scraped a win thanks to the handicapping system, ahead of a strong Inverness crew, but hey - a win's a win!
18/11/05Scullers' Head
All entries for this rescheduled event (Sat 3rd Dec) to be sent to  by Thursday of next week (24/11)!
An interesting debate on the date for the Festive Tubs (see opposite) is unfolding on the GRC Google Group.
17/11/05GRC NEEDS YOU!! BUT... It will be possible for some of our members to race on 26 November. If you want to get in a crew on the day, please get in touch with or as a first step.
The full list of helpers is here.
16/11/05New mailing list
There is a new GRC mailing list/archive on Google Groups.
Members email addresses will be added gradually over the next few days. When your address is added to the group, you will receive an email message. You will also be able to post messages to the group.
If you are not on the group and want to be, please send an email to me using

15/11/05Inverness Head
Provisional draw is now up.
also Essential info and a slinky new Map.
2 GRC crews will be racing this weekend. Keep an eye on the noticeboards for changes to normal routines as a result.
HELP!
has set himself the not inconsiderable task of producing a list of GRC entries and results over the last two years. He would appreciate your help to complete it.
14/11/05 Boat House Maintenance
A suggested list of things that need done:
For instance:-
  1. Clearing of fallen leaves and branches from the car park. Apart from being unsightly and creating a slipping hazard when they mulch down, they block the drains resulting in flooding of the car park.
  2. Cleaning of rainwater gutters around the boathouse. The chicken wire fitted into these needs to be removed so that accumulation of dirt can be removed and downpipe strainers cleaned.
(This is ladder work and able to be tackled by only a few souls.)
  3. Trimming back of intrusive growth at the Northern end of the carpark.
SARA Coaching Conference (3 & 4 Dec.)
We have received the following info about this from SARA:
Info, Speakers and App.form.
9/11/05 Remember to turn out the lights!
The Scottish Regatta Calendar for 2006 is up on the SARA web site.
What a sorry collection of non-events. David Biddulph's list is a bit more informative - at least the English regional regattas are on it, so we can see what we're missing.
Scullers' Head (Tideway)
The draw for this event (same day as or 4s Head) is up. I have spotted only 1 Scottish-based sculler.
8/11/05 Shortage of racking space (1)
Would this idea float?
(2) ...and this idea from Joe, who is
bored at the office,
....but thinks "if we run out of racking space we can always do this!!!!"
Inverness
Details of the Inverness Fours Head on 19 Nov.
4/11/05Fours Head
The 2005 GRC Fours Head will be on 26th November,  details are here.
Any other documents - safety etc. - will be added as I receive them.
3/11/05AGM outcomes
Some changes to memberships and committee.
Here is a summary of the meeting.
2/11/05GRC Annual General Meeting
Wednesday (2 Nov 2005)
at the Boathouse
Meeting starts 7:30 pm - be there in good time!

The Agenda and a copy of last year's AGM minutes are on the GRC Private Area.
GRC Fours Head - 26/11/2005
It's time to start organizing this.
We always need ALL the help we can get -  has prepared this estimate.
Please let him know if you can help on the day -
GRC Needs YOU!
Need a challenge, ladies?

Maybe this is for you!

27/10/05 Sewage news -
All back to normal!
We all owe a large debt of gratitude to Bill Mac, Sandy and George 'Veet' Lawson who removed the broken sewage pump on Monday and replaced it on Wednesday (assisted by GL's son Alastair) with the new one which Bill had assembled on Tuesday.
As you can imagine, this work was carried out in really quite vile conditions.
FC reckons the club has been saved a hefty four-figure expense due to their efforts.
Scullers' Head
Race is on the Clyde this Saturday, start at 2 p.m. Start order and other details on the SARA web site.
GRC competitors: Clap, PT, Russell, Daniel, TK, Martin, Ben and Sam.
Good to see Ben and Sam diving straight in (er.... poor metaphor)....
 - BUT NAE WIMMIN!
25/10/05 Political!
Here's a suggestion (from Joe - the loud one) that might brighten up a training session.
Another fundraising idea. Who wants to beat 15.8 km?
24/10/05 URGENT!
There is a serious problem with the boat house sewage system. Unfortunately, this means there is no drainage of any sort for the time being.
Until it is repaired, do not:
  • use the showers
  • use the toilets or
  • run ANY WATER into ANY DRAIN in the boat house - at all!

Update - there are paving slabs lifted and holes dug at the side door to the boat house - BE CAREFUL!
Hopefully, everything will be operational again by Wednesday evening - but no guarantees!

On a lighter note, and related to the above, the webmaster received this kind message.
Interesting to see this result from the Head of the Charles in Boston this weekend. (2nd placed Marie was in the VB quad at the Masters with Lindsay, Al and Clap.)
18/10/05 Scullers' Head
All entries for this event (Sat 29th Oct) to be sent to  by Thursday of this week!
Glasgow Rowing Club A.G.M.
From Stephen:
Just a reminder that we have our AGM coming up on 2nd November, therefore any changes to the constitution should be with  by this Wednesday (19th October).
Also, all the Committee places are re-elected on a yearly basis, therefore, please feel free to propose people in advance assuming that you have discussed it with them and they are willing to stand. If you could also arrange someone to second them that would make things simpler and easier on the night.

Last Year's AGM Minutes, and a proposed alteration to the club Constitution are on the GRC Private Area.

17/10/05New boats?
Maybe we should add some of these to our fleet - at least they wouldn't use much shelf space!!!
The video is worth a look.
13/10/05More heads

Ronnie
usually likes to lead these things by example.....
3/10/05 Safety
The Leo Blockley Memorial Campaign web site has published a very clearly-written document on the subject of survival when immersed.
Head Races
The first heads are upon us. There are 2 this weekend on the Clyde. I'm not sure what entries are in from GRC - but it does mean that the river will be v. busy and will be effectively closed for training after about 10:30 on Sat. and 11:30 on Sun. - or earlier (watch this space).

For anyone wanting to enter the Clydesdale Scullers' Head (29/10, no details yet), I'll post details here shortly on who is co-ordinating entries.

23/09/05Ups and downs of racing eights.
Have a read through this.
21/09/05Eggheads!
Should have put this up sooner - auditions are 24 Sept!
The BBC are looking for teams of 6 contestants.......  chance of winning anything from 1000-35,000.... they would love to have more wimmin on the show... Teams should have big personalities....

It's a no-brainer, isn't it?
More details on the SARA website or from .

20/09/05Only sleeping
No, no-one's died, I just haven't done anything since the Masters'.
Not many photos from that to be seen, anywhere on the web. Just these, so far.
NEW: some grubby thumbnails from the 'official' photographers.
I'll put a separate page up, presently.

Meeting on Sat 1 Oct - look at the Vets' Noticeboard
Minutes of August's Committee meeting are on the GRC private area.
Japanese Guests
On the last day of the Master's regatta, we were visited by guests from the Mitsubishi Rowing Club of Japan.
Bill Mac, Beth, Paul Ingram and Andy gave them a tour of the boathouse. In return, they presented GRC with a photo, a hand-made crossed oars plaque and a T- shirt. Big Ross was there for the photographs as well. Andy drove them back to the hotel afterwards.
6/09/05Masters - Photos
Can we have LOADS of photos from this week's regatta? There will be no shortage of opportunities. Special prominence will be given to the best photograph of ridiculous, florid-faced, blazered buffoonery.
(Early entries.....)

Read this important note from the FISA Masters organisers: "Please remember that the FISA rules state that every competitor must provide official proof of their age. This documentation will be checked when you register at the Regatta Office. Please ensure that any documentation that you have can be clearly read.".
It could never happen here!

Also welcome - if anyone wants to contribute copy to the web site (for example, club history, technical notes, equipment care...etc. -  the list of subjects is endless) - I'll be happy to build it in.

Quality Press?
I see that, not for the first time, The Herald's " " has managed to bury the Glasgow Rowing Club name as deeply as possible in this Nat. Champs Report. No name-check for Daniel or Alistair unlike some of the other Scottish successes.

Here is a much better article from icDumfries, the on-line version of the Dumfries and Galloway Standard.

The Gorbals Fair -
Finally got these pictures:
...anyone want to add some words?
Nearly famous? (look for "ONE MAN AND HIS MICROPHONE")

Nithsdale regatta
The 140th Anniversary Nithsdale Regatta was a very succesful event - not least for Peter and Martin in their VE double - yet another win for the Scottish Champions.
No similar joy from the VC four, who produced a lacklustre performance in losing to GWC in vet 4+.

The Gorbals Fair
Was very successful, I believe. Any pictures?

24/06/05
Scandalous!
You may want to have a look at www.rowingbeast.com, "For All Your Scottish Rowing Information".
It's been around for a while now and the 'chat' has been a bit stroppy, although tightly (and quickly) maintained. There are now separate boards for different conversations, which might help in keeping the content more 'sensible'.

Many apologies for the recent lack of news - just toooo busy!
Anyway, here goes:

GLASGOW RC
Winning all over Europe!

The club's winning ways have continued this season, with good-to-brilliant performances resulting in wins at
SPR,
Ghent International Regatta
(RowTV),
Castle Semple,
Shrewsbury
,
Peterborough
(RowTV) and, most notably,
Daniel Prescott winning the Gold medal in Ju16 sculls at the National Schools Regatta.

Here are some
Photos

If you think there's anything I've missed, let know!
I'd be very happy to receive any pictures of Ghent, Met or Nat Schools.
25/4/05Strathclyde Park Regatta
More news as time permits - but GRC had a very successful regatta, not least in the way everyone mucked in to help in the tent.
Thanks to everyone who helped.
The club owes a particular debt of gratitude to non-members: Maureen (the Boss) and to Teresa, Shona, Laura, Una (and her friend Mima), Helen and George at the bar.
As so often before,
Sandy was non-stop at the regatta and in the days before, managing the whole project.
20/4/05SPR News (1)
The draw for Saturday and Sunday's races at SPR is now available, GRC crews highlighted in yellow and GRC finals in green.
(Updated Wed. evening - these are supposed to be the final versions....)
Congratulations to Jo who ran the London Marathon on Sunday in a very respectable time of 4 hours and 24 seconds.
Be prepared to cough up the sponsor money!

10/4/05- St.ABC Regatta
Nothing on the SARA site yet, but our spy at Lochore Meadows says that GRC's only competitor, Peter Parker Trenchard beat Tom Hewitt of SPRC to win MRes2 sculls.
We hear also that BReid was seen to be helping rescue capsized schoolgirls from the icy waters.

Rumour has it that, due to a failed safety inspection of the Clyde/Clydesdale boathouse, a request has been made to make the GRC boathouse the HQ for the Strathclyde University Regatta, next weekend.

22/4/05SPR News (4)
Please get in touch re. boat loading if you haven't already done so.
ALSO - there are still gaps in the Catering rota.
21/4/05SPR News (3)
Keep an eye on the Vets and Ladies Notice Boards for updates on Trailer loading. The trailer will be at he club, probably Friday afternoon. Some boats are already loaded, but if your boat is going on the trailer (e.g. Vet VIII), make sure you're going to be there to help.

provisional list of shifts and names.
LET ME KNOW ASAP if you can't do a stint I've put you against - OR IF YOU CAN DO MORE!!
Email with responses.
23/3/05- Post-Tideway
No surprise that Al was the best GRC performer last weekend, finishing 6th in the Tideway Scullers' boat in the HoRR and then following that with 2nd and the VB Pennant on the Sunday.
The GRC/Semple composite had a strong row and the GRC VC crew performed well, although both might have done with at least one pre-race punt!
17/3/05- Schools Head
Rumour has it that GRC are running a tea room for this event on Saturday. All help appreciated.
17/3/05- Tideway people!
  1. Be at Furnivall at 9:30 sharp on Sunday.
  2. Suggestions for Saturday evening...? e.g Novotel Bar 6 p.m. to watch the rugby?

20/2/05 - Inverness Head -
A fine showing by GRC at this event - everyone who raced won a prize... so did the Umpires!
Our Veteran eight was the fastest crew overall in the second race.
Burns Night - Last call for those incriminating photos...?
14/2/05 - Inverness Head -
Provisional draw for both races this Saturday is now up.

Early details of our own Small Boats Head. Please be there on 12th March to help out.

11/2/05 - CARC Eights Head tomorrow. GRC vet crew in div. 1, unopposed... er, that's it.
Except - Anyone found a pair of gloves? (Sticky ones)
3/2/05 - IMPORTANT! -  ADDITION TO CLUB SAFETY RULES
Please read this note from Henry.
2/2/05 - Much as it hurts to point it out... the results of the SUBC Small Boats Head, held on Sunday, are now available: Div1 and Div2.

Excellent performances from Al (overall winner)Johnny, Daniel and FC & TK - fastest pair in Div.1.
Any pictures, anyone?

1/2/05 - Apologies for not mentioning... the Scottish Indoor Rowing Championships on Sunday 24 Jan., when Lindsay was fastest woman overall, by a substantial chunk, although not racing in the open division. Paul Ingram raced too, and was well pleased with his 4th place, pulling one big handle instead of two small ones.
29/1/05 - Back in business
Afraid the web site has been a bit quiet so far this year, due to a combination of not much to report - and too tired from (s)training my elderly body.
However, it's all action again!

GUBC Western Eight's Head
GRC won Men's Res2 and the fasterVeteran crew was unopposed!

Burns Night - Eagerly awaiting some pictures of this.... there are terrible rumours concerning the mystery guest speaker drafted in to reply on behalf of our oh-so-shy lasses.

Happy New Year!

What about Tideway 2005?

Vets Head - 20 March)
