A grey December day on the Clyde. The early morning fog precluded rowing by all but the clinically insane (a.k.a. GUBC). However, by 12:30 a determined band of competitors had gathered, the fog had cleared, the draw was made and the boats took the water (rather a lot of it - more later...) and it was time for the

FESTIVE TUB DOUBLES CHAMPIONSHIP 2004!

The competitor numbers were sixteen, allowing a simple three-round knockout format.

Both BReid and Kevin "Killer" Dennis had declared themselves non-participant but were persuaded to be permanent coxswains for the afternoon's racing. As you will see from the photographs, this decision meant that the normally rather dull training tubs now adopted a rather more exciting 'planing' profile (though I believe that in nautical circles this attitude is also sometimes referred to as "sinking".)

The event was publicised as being held "under GRC rules". There was an unfortunate episode when "Killer" interpreted this as meaning "cheating permitted", but other than that single lapse, the event was held in a spirit of fair play with the on-board Cox/starter/Umpire/anchor participants adding great value to the proceedings.
